Behold! The power of bacon!
From the moment the event was first held four years ago, BaconFest has proven to be a sure-fire fundraiser for Sunset Terrace Elementary School. How could it not be? There is virtually no food group that can’t be augmented and enhanced by a little bit of bacon.
How about a salad with tomato bacon dressing? Or BLT sliders? Or bacon potato leek soup? Or caramel bacon gelato from Chocolaterie Stam? To name just a few.
“You just don’t have to come and dip all of the strips of bacon into the chocolate fondue but that is option,” said Kristi Penza, chairwoman of this year’s Baconfest. “Everything in moderation.”
The fourth annual Baconfest will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at Canadian Honker Events Apache and Canadian Honker Catering, 1517 16th St. SW, Rochester.
Tickets are available at the Canadian Honker Restaurant, 1203 Second St. SW. Tickets will also be available at the door.
Tickets are $25 for adults; kids 12 and under are $10. A limited number of VIP tickets are available for $75, entitling the bearer to reserved seating half hour early, a swag bag and exclusive appetizers.
Penza said there are two rumors she would like to dispel at the outside. One is the despicable rumor that the event will run out of bacon.
“We never run out of bacon,” she said.
The other is the event will run out of seating. Another falsehood. This year organizers have expanded seating to guarantee that no one will be inconvenienced.
The first Baconfest was held four years ago to raise money for a new playground. Last year, the event grossed $14,000 and netted the group $8,000 from the 550 people who attended. Penza said the money raised will be used to send kids on field trips, buy books for the school and to support assemblies for the kids.
“It also goes back to the students to benefit them in some way,” she said.
The event is part of Rochester Winterfest that takes place during the first two weeks in February.
“Everyone you mention it to like gets a smile on their face,” Penza said. “Everyone loves bacon.”
