Bob Haley is a solo acoustic performer in Rochester who plays covers of music he enjoys, including Chris Knight, The Band, Eric Church, the Foo Fighters and Bob Dylan.
1. Music background
Bob played trumpet and drums in jazz and concert bands during high school. “But the whole time I was in band, I was really drawn to the guitar. I started playing open mic nights in Rochester, and a couple of years ago I decided to put a legitimate set list together and play for whoever would listen.”
2. Workaday life
Bob is a project manager in agricultural construction at KBS in Plainview.
Bob’s first gig was at Kim’s Saloon and Grill in Plainview. “It was completely packed. Being from a small town, a lot of people came out to show their support. It gave me the confidence to keep doing it.”
4. Stand by me, or maybe not
“During gigs, I’ve had intoxicated people ask if they can sing with me. Sometimes they just stand two feet in front of me and stare at me. One guy stood there for 20 minutes. He started dancing right by my side, then he sat down next to me, and then he passed out next to me. Everyone in the bar was taking pictures.”
“It all started with music and my desire to play for people. I am a people person, and I like to get out and mingle.”
6. Turn back time
“If I could do it again, I would probably go back to school to be a music band instructor.”
7. Favorite place to play
“As much as I like playing in a bar, I prefer places where the people are there to listen to the music, where I am not just background music. I want to grab their attention.”
8. Rochester music scene
“I love playing in my home town, but playing in Rochester is a whole new ballgame. They are going to judge based on my music, not because they know me.”
9. Musical style
“I play country, but not radio country.”
10. Where to find Bob
Bob will be playing at Shar’s Country Palace in Rochester on April 15, and at Wenonah Brewing Company in Winona on April 22. You can find him on Facebook.
