If ever there was an event designed for dogs and their owners, CeleBARK 2016 is that day.
The event will feature a medallion hunt, a contest to determine the dog with the best buns, a dog talent show, a pet/owner lookalike contest, treats and vendors, and a chance to mingle with other dog lovers.
“It’s just a day to celebrate the love we have for dogs,” says Pam Miller, the event’s organizer and owner of Bone Appetit Canine Bakery in Rochester. “We do it up. It’s a big party, and we have games and contests and various vendors.”
CeleBARK is set for Saturday on the north lawn of the the Eagles Club, 917 15th Ave. SE, Rochester. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m.
Miller says the event, now in its fourth year, has grown every year it’s been held. This year, they hope for a bigger gathering, given this will be the first time it will be held in June. Previous CeleBARKS were held earlier in the spring and more often than not found themselves at the mercy of inclement weather.
“We’ve had everything from snow and ice, rain and wind,” says Miller. “We’re really hoping for a beautiful June summer day.”
Miller said an estimated 16 businesses have registered to attend the event, including Paws Abilities Dog Training, Bluffs Pet Clinic, Heritage Pet Hospital, Wildwood Sports Bar & Grill and Doo Crew. Representatives of the area’s animal rescue nonprofits will be present as well, showcasing animals available for adoption.
The addition of Coldwell Banker Burnet as a sponsor gave organizers a bigger budget to work and allowed them to plan on a “little grander scale.”
“We are giving away some beautiful gift certificates to all of the winners,” Miller says. “There’s so much going on and we’re trying to pack it into three hours, so it’s going to be intense.”
If people intend to bring their pets, the animals need to be current on their vaccinations, and they need to be on a leash. Miller says CeleBARK is intend to be an event that unreservedly welcomes pet owners and their dogs, an attitude that animal lovers don’t always see in the area’s parks and walking trails.
“It’s kind of a fellowship thing,” says Miller. “You know, people get together in a club or a group or a church. It’s the chance to mingle with other like-minded people.”
