Dan is the bass player and one of the vocalists for the group Jailhouse Payback. The band’s most recent cd, The Wabasha Curse, was released in the summer of 2015.
1. Music background
I have been singing since the first grade and playing guitar since I was 16.
I sang a solo of ‘I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus’ at a Christmas concert, and I received a standing ovation. I wasn’t nervous because I was so young. I just sang it out.
3. Little Lies
We tell people that we are named Jailhouse Payback because we were all in prison together, but it’s a made-up story.
4. Want ads
I went on Craigslist and saw an ad for the band. The heading was ‘Bass Player Wanted: Dead or Alive.’ When I listened to the music, it was alternate Americana, folky rock, and there were all these great harmonies going on. I thought Jailhouse Payback played fun music, so I replied to the ad.
5. Musical style
We play a combination of Americana, alternative country, and rock. We’ve got our own unique sound.
6. In the dark
There is a dark humor in our music, but our songs are witty, too. Some of the songs are true stories about something bad that has happened, but if you listen to the song, it is upbeat with a three-part harmony.
Six years ago I decided that I am never going to stop playing music. It is no longer a hobby for me.
8. On the road again
I would love to be able to go on the road, perform, make a little bit of money, and then go onto the next town.
9. Steal away
Once we were playing a show and some guy tried to walk away with the T-shirts we had for sale. He thought they were free.
10. Where to find Dan
You can find Jailhouse Payback on July 21 at Thursdays on First from 11:30 to 1:00 pm.
