In another part of town, blues musician Joel Ward plays Forager Brewery starting at 8 p.m. just like he does every Thursday, as part of his Theraputic Thursdays series.
On Friday night, March 11, JT Thompson’s favorite local band, Luke n’ Bob Texas, plays the North Star Bar at 8. It’s guitarist Al’s birthday, so expect an even livelier time than normal. The crew brings a Texan-sized chunk of energy to the stage along with their signature country stylings. Check out their tunes at reverbnation.com/lukenbobtexas.
Over at Kathy’s Pub, funky rock squad Dead Larry invades the stage at 9:45 p.m. with their spacey tales of intergalactic adventure. The band’s latest album, “Mona-Lisa Stellarum,” a sprawling, 20-song concept album about a band of spacefarers who crash-land on a planet of werewolves, came out last October. It’s curently streaming on the band’s website, deadlarry.org.
At 10 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, Kathy’s welcomes back Herschel & The Detainees, a Minneapolis-based reggae, funk, R&B, soul, pop, and hip hop crew. Add to the tally by checking it out here: youtube.com/watch?v=H_EOsm3vya0. For more, look to Herschel’s Facebook page, facebook.com/Herschelsmusic.
Upstairs, Sterling Haukom comes correct with Liquor Beats Winter and Glitter Lung for an underground showcase kicking off at 9:45 p.m. Liquor Beats Winter is a band beyond genre descriptors. The singer’s Tom Waits-style yowl and blistering harmonica solos are just icing on the fuzzy layer cake of hard-edged blues and rock styles the rest of the band provides. For preparation, head over to liquorbeatswinter.com, or refer to their last show in the city, a raucous set at the Wicked Moose as backing band for a burlesque show.
Haukom will play solo for the event, but his band, Second Story, a garage-rocky grunge revival act, is releasing a brand new EP online the night of the show. Keep your eyes peeled for updates at secondstorymn.com. Glitter Lung, a punk act, rounds out the show. Check out their Facebook for a taste, facebook.com/glitterlung.
