There will be a vintage rock ‘n’ roll party July 17 in Rochester.
McPherson was announced today as the headline act for Week 2 of the series, which begins July 10 with a concert by Soul Asylum.
McPherson is an Oklahoman who has a fascination for old-time rock ‘n’ roll, circa the 1950s and early 1960s. His music might best be described as “retro-rockabilly,” although he has a bit less twang and a bit more bite than that would imply.
McPherson, who holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Tulsa, started out performing with the rockabilly band the Starkweather Boys. He released his first solo album, “Signs & Signifiers,” in 2010, followed by his latest, “Let the Good Times Roll,” in 2015.
McPherson needs no introduction to Minnesota audiences, having appeared at Rock the Garden 2015 in Minneapolis, on “A Prairie Home Companion,” and on The Current’s Chart Show (where he is now in the Chart Show Hall of Fame). McPherson also played the Glastonbury Festival in 2015 in England.
Headline acts for the seven weeks of this 25th season of Down by the Riverside are being announced weekly. Also announced so far is the return of Lucius for a concert July 31. That band’s show last year was abandoned due to stormy weather.
Down by the Riverside concerts are free and start at 7 p.m. Sundays through Aug. 21. Think Mutual Bank has extended its sponsorship of the series for the next three years.
