Beginning at 6 tonight, May 5, the plucky pop and Spanish guitar stylings of Fernando Ufret fill The Loop. Catch him now while you can, because at the end of this month, he’s headed to Puerto Rico for a tour.
From 8 to 11 tonight at Forager, Joel Ward’s bluesy soup for the soul continues with another installment of his Therapeutic Thursdays.
Minneapolis’ Mobster Lobster claws its way onto the main stage at Kathy’s at around 9:45 on Friday night. The band’s music is an amalgamation of jam and funk with other elements thrown in. Show up prepared to skank around the floor and dodge dreadlocks.
From 6:30 to 10:30 on Friday evening at the American Legion, The Vintage Tones of Spielzeiten und Pausen play deep cuts from the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s, by acts like Roy Orbison, the Everlys and the Beatles. Their name, taken from a Beatles contract at the Kaiserkeller in Germany, means “playtimes and breaks.”
At 9:45 on Saturday night, Monolithic plays Kathy’s Pub. This is, hands down, the act of the weekend. The band’s Soundcloud page features a download of the mellowed-out “Where Will You Go.” The cool keys and elevating harmonies are a welcome departure into freshness borrowed from the 1960s and ‘70s.
When the doors open at 8 on Saturday night at the Wicked Moose, hard rock acts Via and Gabriel and the Apocalypse will be inside, ready to leave the sound-system smoking. Via’s heavy as lead instrumentals serve as a backdrop to vocal delivery that is almost a caricature of early aughts rock styles, while Gabriel and the Apocalypse sound kind of like Spineshank with a female vocalist. Fittingly, the band opened up for Filter and Orgy in April.
From 8:30 to half past midnight Saturday, the Robin Music festival hits Graham Arena at the Olmsted County Fairgrounds. The all-day festival kicks off with a DJ set for kids courtesy of DJ Kirk, who bailed on the bar scene to start playing clean tunes to the youth. Later acts include Hair of the Dog, Incognito, Night Shift, Time Machine and the Johnny Holm Band. Admission prices vary — day passes are $10, night passes $20 and all-day passes are $25.
