Two more concerts in the 2015 Down by the Riverside concert series were announced recently.
Sonny Knight & the Lakers will headline the Aug. 9 concert, followed by Lucius on Aug. 16.
Sonny Knight, who dropped out of music for several years in the 1980s to work as a truck driver, has found his musical career revived in a big way in recent years. Knight and his new band, the Lakers, spent time in 2013 in a cabin in northern Minnesota, listening to old soul and gospel records and putting together a set list. The preparation paid off when the band started a buzz with live shows in the Twin Cities. A debut album, “I’m Still Here,” was released in 2014, capping a later-career revival for Knight, 67.
Opening the concert will be local funk/soul band Suite.
Lucius, based in Brooklyn, N.Y., is a five-piece pop band that The Guardian newspaper hails as “the missing link between Arcade Fire and Haim.” The band’s infectious pop melodies are complemented by vocals that The New Yorker describes as “seemingly impossible harmonies with flawless grace.” The band’s latest album is “Wildewoman.”
Opening the Lucius concert will be Henry James Patterson and his band, from Red Wing.
The free concerts are at 7 p.m. in Mayo Park, behind Mayo Civic Center.
Previously announced concerts for this season are the Fabulous Thunderbirds on July 12, Firefall on July 19, Eric Paslay on July 26, and the Rochester Concert Band & Choir on Aug. 2. The final week of the season will be announced May 14.
