Garage sale season is in full swing and sales are popping up all over the place. Here are five go-to tips for being a savvy garage sale shopper.
1. Be an early bird.
To find the best items, you’ll want to get to sales as close to when they open as possible.
2. Look for city-wide and neighborhood sales.
Throughout the summer, various cities put on “city-wide” or “neighborhood” sales. These are a great way to hit several sales in one day. Local churches and nonprofit organizations also often hold large community sales, which bring together a variety of items in one place.
3. Map it out.
Rather than aimlessly following garage sale signs, check the listings in the newspaper or do some online digging and map out a route to save time and gas if you plan on going to multiple sales.
4. Carry cash.
Have a variety of different bills and change for easy buying.
The great thing about garage sales is that you have the option to negotiate prices or bundle items. Most people are eager to get rid of the stuff they’re selling (especially toward the end of their sale) and will likely agree to your barter – as long as your offer is reasonable!
Whether you’re a garage sale virgin or veteran, make use of these tips in your upcoming treasure hunting!
