Just south of Rochester, a straight shot down Highway 52, you’ll find Adourn. Located on Main Street, the brick walls and wood floors are original to the building, lending an air of history to the new and upcycled items you’ll find inside.
Owner Melisa Klema opened Adourn four years ago this month, after she outgrew her garage. What began as a furniture painting endeavor has expanded to include a wide range of handmade, one-of-a-kind pieces of art, furniture and more.
“We slowly got into custom furniture building, and we do a lot of that now,” says Melisa. She also has her own candle and t-shirt lines that she sells, along with jewelry and Drink Local bottle openers. “I also sell milk paint, which was a big change a couple of years ago,” she says. Since she uses milk paint on most of her furniture rehabs and creations, it’s been a nice addition to Adourn.
Melisa also offers interior design services, along with custom cabinet and furniture painting. While many of her customers are repeats, she gets a lot of traffic being right on Highway 52. “I get a lot of Decorah clients, a lot of Rochester and Minneapolis clients, and a lot of local people as well,” she says. “Now that my name is getting out there a little more and I’ve been open for a while, it’s been a lot of new people.”
Chatfield is a great community for Adourn, says Melisa. “It’s really cool to be part of a small community and have (Adourn) be a destination shopping place.”
Supporting local means a lot to her, as all of her items are handmade. “A lot of time, care and effort goes into handmade stuff,” she says. When you buy from a local store, you’re supporting a local family and that community. “Little shops like this bring jobs to the community, it brings more people into the community shopping, spending money…Local is just a good thing.”
