Updating your curb appeal can be daunting but changing your garage door can be a huge asset to this task. A new garage door does more than just change the look of your home; it can also have a positive effect on lowering your energy bill.
There are three main reasons to update your garage door: “Improving the appearance of the exterior of your home, increasing the thermal efficiency of your garage and the return on investment where you’re going to improve the value of your overall home,” says Ron Nelson, manager at Overhead Door Company of Olmsted County.
Many homes are built with an attached garage with insulated walls but a non-insulated door. Heat escapes from the house to the garage and quickly is pulled out through the non-insulated door, letting cold air seep into the house. By choosing an insulated door, it will help keep cold air out of the home and can have a significant effect on your energy bill. “With an insulated garage door,” says Erik Gruhlke, sales manager at Overhead Door Company of Olmsted County, “you’re going to cut down on wind infiltration, keep the garage warmer and your thermal efficiencies are going to go through the roof.”
The return on investment for a new garage door is quite high, about 88%. For many people, this is the tipping point they need to start looking for a new garage door.
The options available to homeowners for new garage doors are incredible. There are 11 standard colors now available, along with six or eight different models and styles. Adding windows, glass, handles and hardware can enhance all of these combinations. “We also do wooden doors,” says Nelson. A new garage door will hugely change the look of your home, especially if you choose a door that is drastically different than your current one.
Carriage house doors and courtyard doors are moving higher and higher on the trend scale. Gruhlke says one of his favorite doors is the stamped carriage house doors. “We can add handles and hinges, there are multiple window styles with different accents inside the windows…it’s available in 11 different colors.” All of these choices give homeowners flexibility when it comes to designing the look they want for the exterior of their home.
Because there are so many options, oftentimes it takes a buyer longer to decide what they want than to have the door ordered, shipped and installed. Nelson notes that a lot of people are going online to find looks that they like and will then come into the showroom to pick out what suits them best.
One neat feature the Overhead Door Company has is an interactive design center. Homeowners can upload a photo of their home and can play with adding different garage doors. This technology allows people to get an idea of what their home will look like with any given garage door, though Gruhlke does say that sometimes this can provide too many options for homeowners. It does, however, give them a chance to see if the door they want will work well with their home and gives them an opportunity to try something else if they don’t like it.
You should only have to buy one new garage door during the time you spend in your home. At least that is Nelson’s hope. With a wide array of options to choose from now, homeowners should be able to find a door to suit their style and update their home.
